In my Dutch newspaper there was an article about loneliness yesterday. We’re having a second lockdown. It is soft, whereas the first one was intelligent. Therefore it’s only natural this subject comes up again.
There is however a much deeper and more fundamental sort of loneliness than that of not having contact with other people, I think. Not being connected to, or even in your innermost being part of nature, results in a lethal emptiness. We’re only part of civilisation, we miss the more basic connection, the awareness of being just a part of the rich, varied and wondrous system we also depend on. We are not essentially different from an oak tree, a blackbird, or a jellyfish. We all depend totally on each other and the whole. We are different in that we think more (intelligent?). What was the result of that? Mega hubris and the resulting dead earth that will sooner or later be our legacy…….
