Rogue state

Interesting times: the most powerful state the world has ever seen is now a rogue state. This country has a complete and utterly stupid vain man at its head. This man in my opinion is consequently pure evil.

This will not end well……

End of a dark age for US and UK?

Across the North Sea and far far away on the other side of the Atlantic there are two countries that are special in so many ways….

Take language for instance. Most people in those lands know there’s no need whatsoever to learn a different language; the foreigners one meets understand everything one says and if their English isn’t so good when they say something to you maybe that’s positive too. That way one isn’t disturbed by non Anglo Saxon ideas, one can stay in one’s own exceptional bubble.

Something else UK and US have in common is their very old ‘democracies’. Of course there are a lot of differences between the two. I believe however the similarities are more important now. How on earth have both of them come to be governed by totally farcical creatures that are 100% unable to deal with any crisis, or actually understand what the concept of government (for instance taking care of the people in your democracy) means in the best of times?

There are of course many reasons for this that I won’t go into the details of.

Or will I after all? Education has gone down the drain, especially if you are poor. Re education: Oxford educated Dominic Raab, who is now foreign minister and designated survivor, did not know Dover is a very very important port for importing goods into Britain (tomatoes anyone?). So in England at least one can also be uneducated having been to a top university. I’m convinced any democracy needs voters that have had the possibility when they were at school, to at least get acquainted with the idea that independent thinking is a possibility.

That brings me nicely to the next exceptional characteristic of these lands: the press. The detail here is Murdoch and Fox news.

The totally crazy and as we see now dangerous (inept clown leaders when you need wise experienced adults) leadership is a direct result of the FPTP voting system.

The only democratic system is PR. Of course one can moderate it in many ways (for example the complicated beautiful and so far safe system in Germany. This was at least in part designed by the English and Americans after the war. As an aside: How ironic that they did not then think their own system might need improving).

I’m getting tired now so I’m continuing in a speedier form.

FPTP leads to a two party system.

This in its turn results in a fight culture. Fighting is no way to govern as we can observe in the dreadful behaviour in the Commons in England and the parliaments in the US. The coalitions and compromise culture in PR lead to more effective government.

In FPTP the principle of one vote one representation does not exist. If your party in your district loses, you will be represented by the ‘enemy’ which means you are NOT represented in your parliament. It often occurs in this system that a large majority in parliament represents a minority of the voters. This is NOT democracy.

Actually in recent times, as for instance in Europe new parties tend to rise and old parties fall apart, we see another essential weakness in a two party system: The same trend does take place in the two party systems: the old parties in the UK for instance spend most of their energy not falling apart. There is such a neurotic urge to prevent this from happening that beings like May, Johnson and Corbyn rise to the surface.

If you have to have a system like that the least thing you should also have, is checks and balances to prevent the crazies or mentally challenged from being the leader of your country.

So let’s finish up with the positive again. Corona might have the effect of welcoming two brand new and improved proper democracies into the world. Wouldn’t that be great?

Luchthaven Lelystad. Verdwenen schrikbeeld……..

Op de laatste dag van maart horen we dat de opening van luchthaven Lelystad weer wordt uitgesteld. Deze keer komt dit niet doordat vasthoudende verstandige mensen wijzen op de rampzalige gevolgen van dit project voor de omringende natuur en het milieu in het algemeen, maar door iets wat zelfs de laatste climate change denier (CCD for short) op zijn scherm kan zien: airports all over the world have now turned into gigantic plane-parks!!!!

Ik vond overigens het idee om het vliegveld daar te vergroten meteen al hilarisch als het niet zo treurig was: hoe haal je het in je hoofd zoiets te plannen vlakbij de Oostvaardersplassen, een gebied aangelegd om ganzen en andere vogels aan te trekken. Ik heb begrepen dat het een beetje vervelend is als er een vogel in je vliegtuigmotor komt. En niet alleen voor de vogel. Soort grenzen aan de groei voor ons minilandje.

Non CCDers have known the disastrous effects of flying for ages. We have the vapour-trails, the nasty exhaust fumes, the ugliest mass consume places on earth, i.e. airports, the noise and of course the aesthetic thing of having these ugly machines spoiling our view when we look up. The latter is of course subjective.

Well, there we are. Now we all cannot avoid recognising another disadvantage of the hubris of flight for humans. Wow, these thousands of flights per whatever help an epidemic to spread around the world in weeks.

If only the wisdom of people had developed parallel to the invention of things.

Overigens ben ik van mening dat the geese gerust kunnen zijn; Lelystad airport komt er niet.

I finish with a little mind game: what does an airplane-park look like after 20 years? We all know what nature does with old factories. Beautiful imho. How pleasing to the eye can abandoned airports be, after having been taken over by nature?

Let’s cruise

Cruises.

Al jaren bekend zijn de berichten over uitbraken van infectieziekten, vaak gelinkt aan voedsel, op cruiseschepen.

De laatste jaren is deze bedrijfstak zo gegroeid, zowel in aantal schepen als in de afmetingen ervan, dat de plaatsen die ze bezoeken er enorme hinder van ondervinden.  Het bekendste voorbeeld hiervan is Venetie;  de louter fysieke schade aan vaarwegen, kades ed door de krankzinnige afmetingen van deze drijvende wolkenkrabbers zou toch aan het denken moeten zetten. 

De overlast is echter overal waar ze aanleggen enorm. Duizenden nieuwe passagiers zwermen elke dag uit over je stad. Zelfs voor de middenstand blijkt dit niet onverdeeld gunstig te zijn;  de passagiers eten bijvoorbeeld liever op hun schip (kost niets extra en voelt veilig). Overigens is de uitstoot aan schadelijke stoffen  van deze rustende giganten enorm aangezien ze hun eigen smerige energievoorziening ook stilliggend gebruiken en zich niet aansluiten op het lokale net.  Als zo’n ding gaat afmeren voor je flat kun je beter geen astma hebben laat staan als ze van wal steekt. Esthetisch gezien zijn deze gevaarten een extreem voorbeeld van de stelling dat toeristen de schoonheid die ze zoeken door hun massale aanwezigheid vernietigen.

De uitstoot van deze giganten als ze varen is uiteraard nog veel groter.

Nu, in 2020, zien we wat Gaia hiervan vond. Onze aarde doet wanhopige pogingen een uit de hand gelopen  experiment (nl. de mens voorzien van intelligentie wat uiteindelijk leidde tot de impliciete ontkenning van het feit dat we ook maar gewoon deel zijn van de natuur) recht te zetten en een plaag te verwijderen. Als werktuig om dit snel en efficient te laten verlopen, maakt ze gebruik van de uitwassen van ons teveel aan hersenen: een heel duidelijk voorbeeld daarvan is de cruise industrie.

Als we hier enigszins intact uitkomen mag er geen cruise meer plaatsvinden.

De cruiseschepen maak je schoon. Alles wat aan smerigheid kan oplossen in zout water mag niet mee en de schepen worden verzonken op de ??% van de oceaanbodem die dood is omdat hij omgeploegd is door onze trawlers—–houvast en hoop voor wat er nog over is aan zeewezens die niet op een dood omgeploegd gebied kunnen leven.
